Watch out for the Costco scam going around on social media

If you’ve seen a $75 Costco coupon on Facebook or Twitter, don’t bite. As tempting as it may seem, Costco is warning customers that it’s a scam.

Too good to be true

According to Snopes, the scam originated as a Facebook post that was prompting users to fill out multiple surveys in order to receive a coupon for Costco’s 50th anniversary. Upon survey completion, users were redirected to a webpage that encouraged them to input a fair amount of personal information: names, addresses, birth dates, phone numbers, and more.

Still, the coupon wasn’t provided: In order to receive the “coupon,” users also had to sign up for at least six “reward offers.” These typically involved applying for a paid subscription service or credit card.

Costco intervenes

On Tuesday, Costco took action against the scam, urging customers to stop sharing the “coupon” on their social media pages.

“Despite several posts out there, Costco is NOT giving away $75 coupons,” the company posted on Facebook. “While we love our fans and our members, this offer is a SCAM, and in no way affiliated with Costco. Thanks to our fans for letting us know about this recurring hoax!”
